Background

Scope and content:

The B. Kwaku Duren papers, 1964-2012, consist of correspondence, reports, ephemera, clippings, photographs, research materials, and audio visual materials created and collected by lawyer and activist B. Kwaku Duren (born 1943). The papers document more than 40 years of Duren's work with civil rights, political prisoners, police misconduct and community relations, community and political activism, and reparations for slavery, and with organizations including but not limited to the Black Panther Party, the New Panther Vanguard Movement, and Community Services Unlimited.

Biographical / historical:

B. Kwaku Duren (also known as Robert Donaldson Duren and Bob D. Duren) was born in West Virginia in 1943. In the 1940s his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio and in the 1950s settled in Long Beach, California. Duren's teen and young adult years in California (the 1960s) were marred by legal troubles and he served jail sentences for much of this period, most notably in Soledad, one of California's most notorious prisons.

Prison time changed the trajectory of his life. In jail Duren was exposed to and read many classic books on African-American history and political philosophy. After being paroled in the 1970s, Duren became a community activist; his primary activities were with alternative schools, including the Intercommunal Youth Institute, and the founding of the Coalition Against Police Abuse which was in part inspired by the fatal shooting of his sister Betty Duren by California Highway Patrol officers. Duren also collaborated with national organizations. Most notably, he founded the Southern California Party Chapter of the Black Panther Party. In the 1990s Duren continued the legacy of the Panthers by playing a large role in the New Panther Vanguard Movement, an attempt to redirect and reenergize black activism.

Duren also was involved in government and law. In 1989 he obtained his JD from the People's College of Law (Los Angeles) and passed the bar in 1990. Before being awarded his JD, Duren sued the LAPD, specifically Chief of Police, Daryl F. Gates, for spying and infiltration of some of his groups; the suit was settled. He was also heavily involved in politics; he ran for Congress three times and Vice President once under the Peace and Freedom Party.

Duren continues his activism today and resides in Compton, California.

Political Prisoners, the Prison System, and Assassinations

Background

Scope and content:

Political prisoners and their supporters often maintain that the imprisoned has been detained at the behest of the government and various other institutions of law and order. This series contains news stories on arrests and subsequent justice campaigns on behalf of the alleged falsely imprisoned. Also included are essays, letters, and other publications written and collected by the imprisoned. In addition, this series includes the stories of those not only imprisoned but also information on the assassination and murder of political activists such as Huey P. Newton, George Jackson, and Malcolm X, and the murder of figures such as Latasha Harlins. While people like Harlins were not explicitly involved in political activism her murder sparked massive political debate. Finally, there is a plethora of literature explaining the prison system. For files pertaining specifically to the police see "Police Misconduct and Accountability."

Contents

Assassinations

Background

Scope and content:

Betty Duren

Background

Scope and content:

This series includes materials from Betty Duren justice committees and case files.

Biographical / historical:

Betty Duren also known as Betty Scott-Smith, was an African-American activist who was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officers. Duren was one of the founders of the Intercommunal Institute alternative school in Long Beach, California. The school was a success in providing a safe haven for young people off the streets and for providing students with a sense of history, identity, and culture, aspects that in the opinion of many were lacking from mainstream educational institutions. In 1975, Duren and her partner were pulled over by the CHP for a seemingly routine stop that resulted in the shooting and death of Duren. Officers at the scene contended that Duren had pointed a gun at them which justified the shooting and eventually the officers were cleared of wrongdoing. Although the officers were not convicted of murder many still believe that this was a grave miscarriage of justice. Events such as this led her brother B. Kwaku Duren to focus heavily on protesting police abuse.

Carl Hampton

Background

Scope and content:

This contains Hampton memorial and funeral flyers and news coverage of the shooting.

Biographical / historical:

Carl Hampton was a young African-American activist who was assassinated by members of the Houston Police Department. Influenced by the Black Panthers, Hampton formed The People's Party II. He focused on galvanizing the community to speak up against police violence and he worked to build a multi-racial coalition. At the age of 21 in 1970, Hampton stepped in to question a Houston policeman about the harassment of a person selling a party newspaper, and eventually Hampton, who legally had an open carry gun permit, drew his gun when he realized that the officer pointed a gun at him. Hampton was shot and killed by an army of police officers in a subsequent standoff. [http://www.itsabouttimebpp.com/Chapter_History/Police_Assassination_of_Carl_Hampton.html]

Fred Hampton Jr.

Background

Scope and content:

This series includes news stories, self-published essays, film clips, and materials from the campaign to free Fred Hampton Jr.

Biographical / historical:

Fred Hampton Jr. was the sone of Fred Hampton, who served as the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. Eventually Hampton Sr. rose through the ranks to serve the Black Panther Party in a national capacity. Supporters of the party praised his community initiatives along multicultural lines and also his charisma and his abilities as an orator. Government offices and officials such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and specifically Director J. Edgar Hoover found Hampton Sr.'s efforts to unite communities as a danger to American society. At the time the FBI's "Counter Intelligence Program" (COINTELPRO) had long been infiltrating and illegally surveilling groups and individuals deemed as "radicals" and therefore domestic threats. The FBI characterized the Black Panthers in this manner specifically, targeting Hampton Sr. The FBI, with the help of informants and high ranking government officials in Illinois, carried out a raid on Hampton Sr.'s apartment in 1969 resulting in the assassination of Hampton Sr. and fellow Black Panther Mark Clark. The government claimed that they had fired on the parties in the apartment in self-defense, though ballistics evidence disproved this theory. Fred Hampton Jr. was born just weeks after the 1969 assassination. Hampton Jr. has also engaged in activism and many claim that he has been imprisoned for it. Hampton Jr.'s main causes have been African internationalism, protesting racism, and prisoners' rights.

Huey P. Newton

Background

Scope and content:

This series contains materials from the Free Huey P. Newton campaign and flyers for his funeral service.

Biographical / historical:

In the 1960s Huey P. Newton founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. While the Panthers brandished guns and military wear, Newton and the Panthers were just as militant about serving the community. During Newton's time as the leader of the Party, in addition to "policing the police," the Panthers engaged in several community initiatives such as the Free Breakfast for School Children Project, Panther health clinics, free alternative education, and other various affordable and free programs. Newton's actions, however, spawned much controversy. In his life he was embroiled in 2 infamous murder/manslaughter trials, and while Newton was not convicted, many questioned his innocence. Elaine Brown, who was appointed as the leader of the Party at one point, contends that violence and particularly gendered violence sanctioned by Newton forcer her to leave the Party. Tragically, Newton was also a user of drugs, and in 1989 was shot and killed by a drug dealer after leaving an Oakland crack house. While to some Huey P. Newton was controversial his life and the initiatives enacted under his leadership, continue to spark much debate.

Mumia Abu-Jamal

Background

Scope and content:

This series includes the documentation of Mumia Abu-Jamal support campaigns and some of Abu-Jamal's essays.

Biographical / historical:

As a young teenager Mumia Abu-Jamal helped to spread the presence of the Black Panther Party in his native city of Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal worked as a radio broadcaster and reporter and presented news topics such as marijuana, communes, and other topics that were often passed on by mainstream news sources. As an activist and a reporter he earned the nickname "The Voice of the Voiceless." In the 1980s Abu-Jamal was convicted of the murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner. Throughout the years, Abu-Jamal for some, has become the face of the wrongfully convicted. Despite his incarceration, Abu-Jamal through prison radio, his own published essays, books, and other forms of media has continued to be "The Voice of the Voiceless."

L.A. Four and L.A. Four Plus

Background

Scope and content:

This series comprises of materials arguing in defense of the L.A. Four and L.A. Four Plus.

Biographical / historical:

In one of the most enduring images of the 1992 Los Angeles Rebellion, commonly characterized as the 1992 LA Riots, Reginald Denny a construction dump truck driver was pulled out of his truck and was severely beaten by the L.A. Four. The attackers appeared to have been motivated by the fervor of the 1992 events, and during their trial this was their defense. The L.A. Four Plus became a cause celebre for people who believed that the persecution of the L.A. Four distracted away from the racism that caused the 1992 Rebellion and at the same time they served as evidence for labeling the events of 1992 a "riot" rather than an uprising or rebellion.

Geronimo Pratt

Background

Scope and content:

This series is comprised of papers from free Geronimo Pratt campaigns, Pratt tributes, and news coverage.

Biographical / historical:

Geronimo Pratt joined the Black Panthers shortly after his service in the army. Pratt proved to be a rising star in the Party, so much so that the FBI feared him. Pratt was heavily targeted under the FBI Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO). Pratt is perhaps most well known for having been convicted of murder in 1972, for the murder of Caroline Olsen. By and large, Pratt's conviction was sealed by the testimony of a police informant and Panther infiltrator who was likely planted by the police or the FBI. In 1997 his sentence was voided, citing a suppression of evidence by the prosecution. After prison Pratt did not disappear from the public eye and became an advocate for wrongfully convicted people.

This series consists of letters written from prisons. Most of the letters were sent to the New Panther Vanguard Movement headquarters in Los Angeles and included requests for literature and materials from the movement. Several prisoners also sent their own poems, drawings, essays, and other forms of self-expression. Some of them believe themselves to have been wrongly convicted and thus some have labeled themselves as political prisoners. For more "well-known" political prisoners see the series "Political Prisoners." These letters provide a birds eye view into the prison experience and prison system.
