Scope and content:

The original collection received in 2016 contained 3 VHS tapes, 44 Micro Audio Cassettes, and 117 Audio Casettes that were converted to three .mp4 video and 161 .mp3 audio files for access copies in the Digital Repository. Currently there are 164 oral history interviews with 65 veterans and Japanese Americans that lived on Maui during WWII.

Biographical / historical:

Originally formed in 1981, the Maui Sons and Daughters of the 442nd sought to "perpetuate the memory and accomplishments of the Japanese Amercian soldiers of World War II." The group of volunteers worked with local historian Dawn Duensing to collect oral histories of WWII veterans and Japanese Americans who lived on Maui during the war years.

The Maui Sons and Daughters of the 442nd eventually became the Maui Sons and daughters of Nisei Veterans and in 1991 the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation with the goal of building a lasting tribute to the Nisei veterans of World War II.

The Maui Sons and Daughters of Nisei Veterans donated two acres of land to the NVMC and a memorial campus was constructed, not only to "to be the responsible receptacle and caretaker of the history, memorabilia and artifacts of Nisei veterans,"but also to function as a living memorial," by incorporating a preschool, adult daycare, education center, and peace park.
