Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of photographs and photocopies of a handwritten memoir.

Biographical / historical:

Willis Grimes White, Sarah Elizabeth White, and Mariam Arnold White, their baby, who was at the time suffering from malarial fever, came to Carmel from Chico in 1904. Frank Devendorf met them at the stage and took them to “White Cedars,” their rental. Some time later Mariam’s grandmother, Mariam Estle White, and Aunt Margaret joined the family, who then bought property on the north side of 9th, between Casanova and Camino Real, and had a cabin constructed. They later tore this down and had Mike Murphy build a larger house for them. It was called “Blue Door.” Sarah became principal of Sunset School from 1907-1910, using her salary to help pay for the lots and construction of the first cabin for the family and another cabin for Mariam Estle White. A son, Willis John, was born while the family was in Carmel. In 1927, Margaret built the Missionary Rest Home on Dolores and 8th. Mariam Arnold White married Francis H. Herrick, who later helped start the first Carmel Kite Festival.
