Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of one receipt, handwritten in ink, in Spanish. Translation: “Received from Don Victor Juares [sic] two dollars, paid according to the order of S. E. Colonel R. B. Mason Governor of California with respect to a lost cannon. Santa Barbara, the 17th of July, 1848. $2.00. [Signed by] Francis J. Lippitt, Captain 1st Regiment of N.Y., Commander of Santa Barbara.”

Biographical / historical:

As incentive to locate a cannon missing from the ship Elizabeth in Santa Barbara Harbor, Governor Mason levied a municipal tax on all citizens in an effort to put pressure on those who might come forward with information on the missing cannon. Each citizen had to pay two dollars and the money was eventually collected and put into a municipal fund. Hubert Howe Bancroft writes about this episode in volume 5 of History of California.
