Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains the publications and writing files of Corrine Lightweaver and LGBTQ-centered magazines and newspapers, to which Lightweaver has featured work. The bulk of the collection focuses on Lightweaver's writings during her tenure with AIDS Project of the East Bay (also known as APEB) and the LGBTQ-centered written works of other journalists from 1985-1989—focused on AIDS activism and LBGTQ+ experiences in Oakland, San Francisco, and other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Biographical / historical:

AIDS Project of the East Bay (APEB) was founded in 1983 by Oakland physician Dr. Robert C. Scott as a program of the Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley. Dr. Scott provided safer sex information to people at risk for HIV infection from his clinic waiting room to public sex environments and points between.

Corinne Lightweaver served as the Media Specialist for AIDS Project of the East Bay (9/1985 – 6/1987). Throughout her career, Lightweaver served as Associate Editor for Frontiers Magazine (11/1987 – 6/1989), Assistant News Editor for San Francisco Sentinel (10/1986 – 10/1987) and since her departure for focusing on HIV/AIDS-related topics, Lightweaver has continued writing and creating visual art regarding her own life story with her journey through breast cancer and mental illness. Currently, Lightweaver is the owner and consultant for Structure and Form—a nonprofit management and organizational development consulting and coaching for executive directors and board chairs of small to medium-sized nonprofits.
