Background

Scope and content:

The Fresno County Farm Bureau annual reports measure 2.25 linear feet and date from 1918 to 1954. The reports are arranged chronologically.

The reports for each year (October to the following November) include the demonstration projects being held that year, the total membership and other types of various information pertaining to the Bureau. There are two parts to the reports, the narrative report and the statistical report. Each report includes photographs of the major events that took place for that particular year and maps illustrating the location of the centers, the type of crop in that area, along with the major projects that were held in the area. A separate report was submitted annually by the Home Department and was filed with the Fresno County annual reports.

Biographical / historical:

The Fresno County Farm Bureau began in 1917 with George Feaver, Jr., of Fowler, California, as president. The Farm Bureau consisted of a president, vice-president and four directors-at-large, stationed at various centers throughout the San Joaquin Valley. LeRoy Smith was the first county agent assigned to Fresno County and was responsible for generating the annual report.

Demonstrations were conducted throughout the Valley by the Farm Bureau and the county agent. Such demonstrations were useful in informing farmers about such topics as increasing soil fertility by means of cover crops, pruning of fruit trees, cooperative marketing of farm hogs by the auction sale method, formation of irrigation districts and the plan for the conservation of Kings River flood waters. The Farm Bureau was also involved with student agricultural clubs. In 1918 the Home Department of the Farm Bureau was established, addressing the woman's domain.
