- Biographical / historical:
-
Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, educator and social activist, was born in San Francisco in1877. Her career began in California and she never strayed far from her native soil nor lost what many came to refer to as her characteristic Western qualities: energy, expansiveness, and an intrepid vision worthy of her role as a latter-day pioneer.
Growing up in the boom and bust economy of Southern California in the early 1890s, Aurelia Henry was not always to experience economic security, but her mother, a self-respecting resolute woman of pioneer stock, provided the family with psychological and cultural continuity. William Warner Henry, her father, ran a succession of wholesale grocery stores and the family was often down on their luck. Mary Merritt, however, was able to attract boarders who would support the family through hard times and keep her children busy with music lessons and speech lessons, all equally important concerns.
Aurelia Henry became one of the few girls at "Boy's High" in San Francisco, went on to graduate from the University of California at Berkeley (1898) and then became one of a handful of women to attend graduate school at Yale University. Applying her study in English at Yale, Aurelia Henry taught at Lewiston State Normal School in Idaho from 1903 to 1908, taking one year off to revise her dissertation for publication and to travel abroad as a recipient of an Association of Collegiate Alumnae Fellowship.
At the age of thirty-two, Aurelia Henry married George Frederick Reinhardt, the son of old family friends of the Henrys', and who like Aurelia, had made his way quite successfully in the world. His work as founder and Director of the University of California Health Service and as a health officer in the community evidenced the beginning of an illustrious career. The marriage ended abruptly after four and a half years with the death of George Reinhardt. Aurelia Reinhardt was left with two young sons to support. Within two years, in 1916, after a highly successful period of work as lecturer in English in the University of California Extension Division, Aurelia Reinhardt was elected President of Mills College.
As President of Mills College, Reinhardt found a task worthy of here formidable personality. She immersed herself immediately and completely in her work. She thrived in her new-found challenge and with a vision of a western women's college equal to the best of the women's collages in the east. She enlisted numerous patrons, benefactors, and dedicated faculty in the work of Mills College. The College expanded physically and intellectually, weathering along with its President the depression and two world wars. By the time of Aurelia Reinhardt's retirement in 1943, the College in character and spirit reflected Aurelia's own persona: liberal, progressive, and vigorous.
In addition to the execution of her duties as President of Mills, Aurelia Reinhardt distinguished herself in her activities apart from Mills. She combined her educational and internationalist concerns in her work with the American Association of University Women. She was elected Vice President of the American Association in 1921 and acceded to the Presidency in 1923. In 1927, she turned over her title to Mary E. Woolley, President of Mount Holyoke, leaving a revived and stabilized national organization. Reinhardt continued her work with the A.A.U.W. into the thirties, chairing the Committee on International Relations (1927-1933). Reinhardt's interest in educational organizations was also reflected in here involvement in the American Council on Education, the National Education Association, the Institute of International Education, and her work on the local boards of education in her own community.
Another important outlet for Reinhardt's interest in international relations was her work with peace organizations and committees of international cooperation and understanding. Quite a bit of her time and energy was devoted to speaking and general organizational work with the League of Nations Non-Partisan Association, National Council for the Prevention of War, Conference on the Cause and Cure of War, the League to Enforce Peace, National Committee on Japanese Relations, the Near East Relief Organization, and the Institute of Pacific Relations, American Council Division, of which she was a trustee. Reinhardt supported such overseas ventures as the Punahou School in Hawaii, the California College in China, and Kobe College in Japan.
Reinhardt's dedication to the cause of peace determined her political allegiances in many cases. She broke with the Republican Party to support Woodrow Wilson after World War I when his dedication to the League of Nations coincided with her own. However, subsequently, Reinhardt supported the Republican ticket, locally and nationally. She campaigned for her friend Herbert Hoover from the early twenties through his decisive defeat in 1932, serving as a Republican state elector in 1928. Reinhardt publicly defended Anita Whitney, a renowned radical, when Whitney was arrested during the Red Scare following World War I. Reinhardt also campaigned vehemently for a more humane policy toward Japanese-Americans during World War II.
Comfortable as well in the less controversial world of women's clubs and organizations, Reinhardt chaired the Department of Education of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (1928-1930) and was state chairman of literature for the California Federation of Women's Clubs. She lectured frequently for other women's groups such as the League of Women Voters, various business and professional women's clubs, the Association of Bank Women, National League of Women's Service, Camp Fire Girls, and the Young Women's Christian Association.
Reinhardt was involved with local issues also. She chaired the City Planning Commission of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce in 1919, served in an advisory capacity in the election for Oakland School Superintendent and spent countless hours in meetings of the Alameda County Institutions Commission, determining policy for count hospitals and sanitariums. She also belonged to the East Bay Regional Park Board. Two California concerns of hers were the Indian Defense Association of California and the Save the Redwoods League.
Toward the end of her career, Reinhardt had accumulated many honors. She was the first woman moderator of the American Unitarian Association (1940-1942) and she received honorary degrees from the University of California (1919), the University of Southern California (1924), Colorado College (1931), Williams (1937), Mt. Holyoke (1937), and Oberlin (1937). Reinhardt died in 1948 and in 1949 the Reinhardt house at Mills College was built and named in her honor.

Record Group I. Personal and Family Papers, 1824-1948
Background
- Scope and content:
-
This record group consists of family records and Aurelia Reinhardt's personal papers. The family records include genealogical material, copies of family letters, and memorabilia concerning the Henry and Reinhardt families. Aurelia Reinhardt's personal papers contain her personal correspondence, scrapbooks, diaries, address and memoranda books, and other personal volumes and documents. The personal correspondence was generated either before or after her Presidency of Mills and correspondence with close family members, with the exception of material that Reinhardt herself separated from her professional files to retain with her personal papers. Record Group I provides information on Reinhardt's family background, her childhood, her undergraduate days at the University of California, Berkeley, her marriage, and the years after her retirement. Arrangement is chronological except where noted otherwise.
Record Group II. Office of the President Files, 1916-1943
Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Office of the President Files, composed largely of correspondence, contains material that passed through the Office of the President during Reinhardt's administration. The material concerns: 1) Reinhardt's daily activities; 2) Reinhardt's administrative duties at Mills College; and 3) Reinhardt's involvement in community and civic organizations.
The material is ordered according to the scheme devised by Reinhardt's secretaries. Generally, material from a group of years (e.g., 1921-1924), had been kept together and then arranged alphabetically by subject, name of organization or correspondent within that group of years. These chronological groups form eleven series: Series A (1916-1919), Series B (1919-1921), Series C (1921-1924), Series D (1924-1926), Series E (1926-1928), Series F (1928-1930), Series G (1930-1932), Series H (1932-1934), Series i (1935-1941), Series J (1941-1943), Series U (undated and unidentified correspondence).
Record Group III. Rosalind Keep files, 1916-1948
Background
- Scope and content:
-
These files, maintained by Rosalind Keep, reflect her activities as Alumnae Secretary, Director of the Office of Publication and her work as personal secretary, biographer, and archivist for Dr. Reinhardt. Rosalind Keep's own activities are documented in the material she retained from the Alumnae Association and Bureau of publication. (Keep also kept Elizabeth Thompson's correspondence with Dr. Reinhardt when Thompson was Alumnae Secretary, 1926-1943). The records of these offices and Rosalind Keep's personal correspondence comprise the first half of the Keep Files. They are groups into sections according to date and then arranged alphabetically according to subject. The subject headings are the ones used by Keep.
As personal secretary, biographer, and archivist, Rosalind Keep cooperated with Dr. Reinhardt in creating a group of files referred to variously as "history material," "for the biography," or "the morgue." In "the morgue," the last half of the Keep Files, one finds letters of tribute to Reinhardt, press releases, and biographical data issued by the Office of Publication concerning Dr. Reinhardt, and printed memorabilia, such as souvenir programs from conventions, graduation, and inaugurations, and any and any assembly addressed by Reinhardt; dinner menus; bulletins from conferences and other meetings Reinhardt attended; membership certifications in organizations; important printed invitations; lecture announcements; and copies of magazine articles about Reinhardt. This material is grouped into series according to type and then arranged chronologically within each series.
Record Group IV. American Association of University Women, 1919-1932
Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Files of the American Association of University Women cover the period of Reinhardt's major involvement with this organization. Reinhardt continued to be active beyond 1932, but after 1932, A.A.U.W. material was filed in with the Office of the President Files. The material, including correspondence, committee minutes and reports, conference bulletins, and copies of speeches is arranged similarly to the Office of the President Files. The largest divisions are according to year groupings; then within these groups, the folders are arranged alphabetically by subject and correspondent. The material within the folders in arranged chronologically unless otherwise noted.
Aurelia Reinhardt, involved at first only marginally with the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, rose quickly to become the National Vice President of the A.A.U.W. in 1921 and the President in August, 1923. Reinhardt's Presidency (1923-1927) proved crucial in the development of the A.A.U.W. Reinhardt was able to unify an organization prone to sectional antagonism and bickering. The National Clubhouse in Washington was established, largely through the force of Reinhardt's personality, inspiring confidence and commitment to the "larger cause." In the later years, 1927-1933, Reinhardt served as Chairman of the International Relation Committee and attended various International Federation of University Women functions.
Record Group V. Writings of Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, 1905-1947
Background
- Scope and content:
-
This record group contains material originally filed with the Office of the President Files, writings collected by George Hedley and other material retained by the Reinhardt family and later donated to the Library. The bulk of the material (published and unpublished) consists of Reinhardt's notes and first drafts of her articles; notes, outlines, and rough drafts for speeches; lecture notes; reading notes and quotes jotted down for potential inclusion in speeches and articles; and other miscellaneous handwritten material, e.g., introductions of other speakers, etc. The printed material includes transcriptions of her speeches, one transcript of a dinner conversation, press releases with extended Reinhardt quotations, and copies of some of her published articles and speeches.
Record Group VI. George Hedley Collection, 1802-1958 (bulk 1956-1958)
Background
- Scope and content:
-
George Hedley, Mills College Chaplain and Professor of Sociology and Economics, began work on a biography of Aurelia Reinhardt in 1955. He requested and obtained sabbatical leave for 1956-1957 to complete his work. The biography, Aurelia Henry Reinhardt: Portrait of a Whole Woman, was published by Mills College in 1961.
The Hedley Collection, material gathered and created by Hedley in the process of writing and researching the biography, includes correspondence between hedley and various acquaintances of Reinhardt, Hedley's correspondence with Mills College officials and publishers regarding the biography, one folder of correspondence between Evelyn Steel Little and Reinhardt acquaintances (Little assembled this material in preparation for her talk, "The Aurelian Way"), Hedley's research material for the biography, the handwritten first draft of the biography, and the corrected first and second typing. The research material includes research notes taken on index cards, lists of possible contacts to be made by Hedley, and copies of clippings and articles regarding communities where Reinhardt resided.
Hedley also collected Reinhardt's personal correspondence from family and friends. The originals were filed with Reinhardt's personal and family papers. Any copies of documents made by Hedley (often including his marginal notes) were filed with the Hedley Collection.
The collection is divided into four series: 1) correspondence; 2) miscellaneous research material; 3) research notes: and 4) drafts of the biography. The folder divisions and arrangement used by hedley was retained in most cases.
