Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of paperback books and periodicals.

Biographical / historical:

Frederick Faust was an extremely successful writer of adventure prose, which he had published under assumed names such as Max Brand, but he failed in his lifelong aim of becoming an established poet. Despite his distaste for pulp fiction, the money he made from producing it allowed Faust a lavish lifestyle. His most famous works included Destry Rides Again and the Dr. Kildare stories. In 1944, while trying to establish himself as a war corespondent during World War II, he was killed during an attack on the central Italian town of Santa Maria Infante.(source: John Leyden. American History; September/October 1997, Vol. 32, p48-55, 8p).
