Background

Scope and content:

Includes a typewritten report describing the murder by Chamakoko Indians of Paul Stahl and three of his children: Selma, Erhard and Gunter. Also wounded in the attack were Paul's wife Freda and daughter Doretta. The Stahls were recent Mennonite immigrants from the Soviet Union to Paraguay. Gaede treated the wounded family members following the attack. The collection also includes 68 photographs of Mennonite settlements in Paraguay, 1946-1948, and 23 photographs of Chaco Indians. The Indian photographs are commercial photographs, not taken by Gaede.

Biographical / historical:

Alvin W. Gaede, a medical doctor in Shafter, California, served as a Mennonite Central Committee volunteer in Paraguay for a few years in the late 1940s.
