Background

Scope and content:

2 archival boxes of programs (1928-1973) for the Carmel Music Society.

Biographical / historical:

In 1926, Dene Denny and Hazel Watrous, two women who lived in Carmel, decided to enhance the cultural life of the Monterey Peninsula by creating a local concert association. Until that time, private recitals and the occasional touring concert sponsored by metropolitan booking agents were the only performances of music in the community. Dene and Hazel experimented by booking their own concerts. Those events were so successful that they led a group of local friends and music lovers to establish the Carmel Music Society - a non-profit organization devoted to bringing the finest talent in the classical music repertoire to the area. Now incorporating the Mozart Society of California, The Carmel Music Society presents yearly a season of world-class performances, and also a competition for aspiring young musicians. Performances are given variously in Sunset Center and at All Saints Church.
