The Sergeant Major Robert J. Shovar China Marine Association Collection is comprised of photos, letters and other material related to the publication of Scuttlebutt.The majority of letters in the collection are addressed to Shovar in his capacity as the editor of the China Marine Association publication Scuttlebutt. China Marines mailed photographs, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings to Shovar with the intent that the materials be used in the publication of Scuttlebutt. It is unclear in the collection whether all materials were published. Materials primarily relate to the post-World War II period, but there are a small number of earlier photographs. Locations represented include Tsingtao [Qingdao], Tientsin [Tianjin], and Peking [Beijing].

Robert Joseph Shovar was born in Toledo, Ohio to Lorin and Marjorie (Riley) Shovar. He served in the United States Marines for 27 years. He was a member of the China Marine Association and editor of the Scuttlebutt newsletter. He passed away in 2009.
