Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains photographic negatives and prints of the Dipsea Race, spanning the years 1918 through the 1960s. The majority of the photographs, mainly in the form of approximately 500 negatives, were taken by Raymond Coyne from 1918 through 1922. His photographs also include hiking and camping scenes in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area, family photographs, and other scenes near his Oakland home including the Oakland streetcar strike of 1919. The collection also includes several programs and other race ephemera, correspondence and notes relating to the celebration of the 100th running of the race in 2010, and Dipsea Race related clippings from 1948 through 2006.

Biographical / historical:

First run in 1905, the Dipsea is the oldest trail race in America, conducted on a 7.4-mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. It has taken place annually since then, with the exceptions of 1932-1933 and 1942-1945. A separate “Women’s Dipsea Hike” was run from 1918 through 1922. Raymond Coyne (1896-1978) of Oakland took most of the older photographs in the collection. An amateur photographer, he documented the Dipsea Race and Women’s Hike during the years 1918 through 1922, as well as his hiking and camping trips in the San Francisco Bay Area.
