Abstract:
The Assembly Select Committee on Genetic Diseases was established on February 10, 1977 to assess and further the State government's involvement in progressing research on genetic diseases afflicting Californians. The work of the committee was heavily focused on evaluating research programs for systemic lupus erythematosus, more commonly known as lupus. The committee was dissolved at the end of the 1989-1990 legislative session. The collection consists of four file folders of Hearing Files from 1977 to 1978.

Background

Scope and content:

The records of the Assembly Select Committee on Genetic Diseases consists of four file folders of textual materials from 1977 to 1978. The records are organized into one Hearing Files series. The Hearing Files include transcripts of public hearings addressing the causes, treatment, and research of lupus. The committee had recently assisted in securing state funding for lupus research, to be distributed through the Department of Health. After review of numerous research proposals, four California institutions were selected by the Department of Health to receive funding for their research programs, with special focus on the cause of lupus. This series of public hearings were held by the committee to interview doctors, researchers, and other professionals at those four institutions to review their progress.

Biographical / historical:

The Assembly Select Committee on Genetic Diseases was established on February 10, 1977 (Assembly Journal, page 415) to assess and further the State government's involvement in progressing research on genetic diseases afflicting Californians. Assemblymember Tom Bane served as chairperson of the committee until it was dissolved at the end of the 1989-1990 legislative session, with the exception of the 1979-1980 session during which Assemblymember Herschel Rosenthal served as chairperson. The work of the committee was heavily focused on evaluating research programs for systemic lupus erythematosus, more commonly known as lupus.

The State Archives received these records in accordance with California Government Code 9080(b) which requires legislative committees to transfer their records to the State Archives when they are no longer needed by the committee.
