Fresno Pacific University was established in 1944 as Pacific Bible Institute by the Pacific District Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Its original campus was located on Van Ness Avenue in Fresno's present-day Tower District. In 1946 the school moved to downtown Fresno where it occupied a former YWCA recreation building designed by Julia Morgan. In 1959 the school moved again, this time to a campus near the intersection of Butler and Chestnut Avenues in southeast Fresno. It changed its name to Pacific College in 1960 and became accredited as a junior college shortly after that time. The college immediately embarked on development of a four-year program, for which it received accreditation in 1965. The school's name was changed to Fresno Pacific College in 1976 and Fresno Pacific University in 1997. It offers a variety of bachelor's and master's programs at its main campus as well as satellite campuses in Merced, North Fresno, Visalia, and Bakersfield.
