Scope and content:

This collection from the California State Prison at San Quentin contains materials related to the prison cemetery and the women's prison, which closed in the early 1930s.

Biographical / historical:

San Quentin State Prison was established in 1854, making it California’s oldest prison. Carol Wingate was arrested in 1927 for forgery and spent two years in San Quentin prison. She went on to author “Women In Prison” about her experiences, which was serialized in the San Francisco Call-Bulletin in 1929.
