In 1966, 35 Mill Valley residents came together under the leadership of Sali Lieberman to create the Mill Valley Center for the Performing Arts [MVCPA]. The nonprofit organization brought arts as diverse as film, theater, poetry, dance, and concerts of classical, jazz, and folk music to Marin County, using the old Mill Valley Golf clubhouse as its performance space. The MVCPA was incorporated as a non-profit in 1968. MVCPA began to exclusively produce and present theater performances in 1977. In 1981, with the MVCPA outgrowing the Golf clubhouse, it launched a campaign raise money to purchase a new home for the theatre. MVCPA changed its name to Marin Theatre Company (MTC) in 1984. By 1987, MTC had become a professional theater company, opening its own theater complex with onsite administrative offices in Mill Valley on Miller Avenue.
