The California State Employees’ Association was founded in 1931 and is California's largest state employee organization, representing almost 140,000 state and university workers, managers, supervisors, and retirees. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is an American labor union founded in 1916 that represents teachers, paraprofessionals, and school-related personnel; local, state, and federal employees; higher education faculty and staff; and healthcare workers. The AFT is the second-largest education labor union in the United States, representing over one million members. The United Professors of California, a college faculty union, was founded in 1970 as the result of a coalition between the AFT and the Association of California State College Professors (ACSCP). In 1932 the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) began from a small group of professional state employees in Madison, Wisconsin. Their focus was to promote, defend, and enrich the civil service system across the country.
