In the three decades since its acquisition by the Oakland Museum of California, the Dorothea Lange archive has received heavy use by scholars, researchers, and the general public. The astonishing range of subjects and themes addressed by Lange over a fifty-year career, coupled with her unusual sensitivity and vision, have made her photographs useful for publications and research in a wide variety of disciplines and fields.

Nestor (Helen) Free Speech Movement Photographs

Nestor, Helen

The Helen Nestor photographic collection at the Oakland Museum of California in Oakland, California contains more than 2,000 prints and 20,000 negatives, is the life's work of an important documentary photographer who specialized in recording the political and social changes of the 1960s and beyond in California. The 39 photographs presented here are a selection from her negatives taken during the Free Speech Movement in the Fall of 1964.
