The mission of Special Collections is to collect, preserve, and provide access to manuscript collections made up of primary sources that focus primarily on California and American history, as well as a specialized book collection on the American West, and the university archives. The Special Collections department especially welcomes Pacific students to use its unique resources in their research, and is also open to the general public.

General Photograph Collections, 1850s-present, bulk 1900-1940s

The photographs contained in the library make up one of the richest and most comprehensive collections of images which document the history of the great Central Valley of California and the development of agricultural technology. The photograph collections (of over 50,000 images) contain positive prints, stereographs, lantern slides, daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes, glass plate negatives, film negatives, and 35 mm slides. They cover the period from the Gold Rush to the present, although the bulk of the collection is pre-World War II. Geographically the collections focus on the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys, the San Francisco Bay Region, Northern California, and the Mother Lode areas. In addition there are many images of Alaska, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. Works of over 700 identified photographers are represented.

Indigenous Objects Collection, 1900-2000

This collection includes items that were originally part of the Garfield Merner collection of Native American artifacts, including vessels made of Jicara gourds, woven bags, a model canoe, textiles, a woven hat, and other items.

Muir (John) Library, 1788-1925, bulk 1870-1914

This collection of Muir’s personal library is curated alphabetically by author in his own bookcases from his Martinez, California home. Most remarkable about this collection is that many volumes contain Muir’s own notations in the form of drawings, marginalia, and personal indexes. Researchers can follow the genesis of his idea from when he read them to articles and books he wrote.

The Holt-Atherton Special Collections and Archives curates hundreds of newspapers, magazines, periodicals in hardcopy and on microfilm that focus on the West, California, the Central Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and Stockton.
