The Society of California Pioneers’ archives document the founding and early history of California, including The Gold Rush, The Earthquake and Fire of 1906, and other defining events. The collection includes manuscripts and letters, paintings, prints and drawings, photographs, books, maps, newspapers and journals, the business ledgers of mining and transportation companies, as well as historic artifacts and decorative objects. An extensive collection of overland and pioneer diaries includes those of John A. Sutter and a letter by Henry W. Bigler, both primary sources announcing the discovery of gold in California.

One handwritten legal deed, dated July 20, 1871 and 3 pages in length, from William Alvord and addressed to Huntington, Stanford and Hopkins. Deed documents the sale of the railroad formerly known as the Placerville and Sacramento Valley Railroad Company by Alvord to Huntington, Stanford and Hopkins. El Dorado County Recorder's document is attached at the end of deed confirming that it was filed in the record as of September 24, 1875.

The memoir of Johann Edward Knoche, an early member of the Society of California Pioneers, describes his trip by ship to San Francisco in 1849, his early work in the city, and his journey on foot to mine for gold. The remainder of the memoir describes his life in San Jose as a businessman and farmer.
