Huntington Library, Rare Book Collections

This collection contains nearly 600 monographs published by British publishing firm A & C Black from the late 1800s through the 1950s (bulk 1901-1936). The volumes cover a variety of subjects including travel in Great Britain and abroad, antiquities, art, history of various civilizations, social life and customs of various cultures, natural history, literary classics and other literature (especially juvenile), gardening, military art and science, recreation, and transportation.

This collection contains 81 booklets from the popular Big Blue Book series edited by American social reformer and writer E. Haldeman-Julius and published by the Haldeman-Julius Company of Girard, Kansas. The collection includes booklets dating from 1927 to 1951, with the bulk from 1947 to 1951. The titles in the collection are primarily on topics related to free thought, humanism, religion, sex, health, self-improvement, and history. More than thirty different authors are represented, including sexologist David O. Cauldwell and freethought writer Joseph McCabe.

An extra-illustrated volume containing 52 letter-press items from Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill Press, prints, portraits clippings and select manuscript items pertaining to Horace Walpole and his circle, chiefly between 1750 and 1801.

This collection contains approximately 450 articles, offprints, pamphlets, and other works collected by the British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) and forms part of the Sir Richard Francis Burton Library Printed Material Collection. The items cover a span of 1812 to 1894 and include material under the subjects: General; Periodicals, Congress Reports; Anthropology, Archaeology, Folklore; Biography; Geography, Travel; Linguistics; Literature; Medicine, Psychology; Religion, Philosophy; Science, Pure, Natural, Applied; Sword; Africa; Americas; Asia; Europe; Pacific, Australasia. Some of the works include manuscript annotations by Burton as well as correspondence sent to him and insertions of articles and clippings.

This collection contains 324 booklets from the Little Blue Book and related series published by the Haldeman-Julius Company of Girard, Kansas in the mid-20th century. The titles in the collection range from reprints of literary classics by authors such as ancient Greek tragedians, William Shakespeare, and Ralph Waldo Emerson to contemporary writings by geologist Carroll Lane Fenton, historian Will Durant. More than 150 authors are represented and the booklets often focus on topics such as free thought, philosophy, religion, evolution, natural history, biographies of scientists and historical figures, and guides and essays about philosophers and authors.

This collection consists of an extra-illustrated set of the The Writings of John Muir : Manuscript Edition (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1916-1924), which includes 260 platinum prints chiefly by photographer Herbert W. Gleason (1855-1937) and ten manuscript fragments in John Muir's hand from a draft of his work, The Mountains of California.

A bound volume containing 79 manuscript and printed broadsides chiefly from the 1720s and 1730s with satirical, humorous, and political ballads, poems, and prose by various Anglo-Irish writers, dramatists, and clerics including Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). Some of the unattributed manuscript poems and annotations are purported to be by Swift.

This collection contains 101 issues of periodicals with content written by or about the British author Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) between 1923 and 2010, with the bulk of the items dating from 1930 to 1965. 76 of the items contain articles or stories by Waugh. The remaining 25 items contain reviews of his books and articles about him. More than fifty periodical titles are represented, ranging from small literary journals to large weekly news magazines in England and the United States.

This collection contains fifty-five magazines, exhibition catalogs, brochures, and other printed material related to the career and life of Edward Weston (1886-1958), a pioneering 20th-century American photographer known for his exploration of form in landscapes, still lifes, and nudes. The collection includes published writings by and about Weston; publications containing his photographs; exhibition catalogs and brochures that feature his work and his contemporaries; as well as later tributes and articles about the photographer.
